Stay home if you're sick, it's not just about COVID-19

For months we have been reminded on the news, at work, at home, and in the community about the public health measures that we can all take to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

You may have the public health measures being referred to as the "Core Four", which includes Staying 6 ft apart, washing your hands often with soap and water, wearing a mask and getting tested.

We should also remember that a key public health measure to prevent spreading illness from one person to another is to stay away from the workplace and other places if you’re feeling any symptoms and/or if you’ve been tested and you're awaiting your results.  If you're required to go to work or an appointment for example, you s
hould call and let them know that you’re feeling ill and shouldn't be coming in. You may want to check cancellation policies for service appointments and ask them if they will waive the fee if you have to cancel due to sickness at this time.  Hopefully the answer will just be "yes, of course".

We can prevent the spread of several illnesses e.g. influenza and other other colds if we speak up about our symptoms and stay away from others.  So let's all do our part to prevent the spread of illness.

Symptoms for COVID-19 are like those for influenza or other respiratory illnesses and can include the following;

  • Fever (feeling hot to the touch, a temperature of 37.8 °C (104°F) or higher)
  • Chills
  • Cough (that's new or worsening, continuous, more than usual)
  • Shortness of Breath / Difficulty Breathing (struggling for each breath, can only speak in single words)
  • Sore throat
  • Severe chest pain (constant tightness or crushing sensation)
  • Lost sense of taste or smell
  • Pink eye (conjunctivitis)
  • Runny Nose
As you can see these symptoms can look and feel like many other respiratory illnesses, so it's best to stay home if you're not feeling well and especially stay away from individuals that you know are immunocompromised.
